English as a second-language-ESLThe lack of ability to communicate in English contributes to the isolation of the Latino immigrant and the development of unhealthy conventional behaviors. Language is clearly an issue for Latinas Unidas clientele. With the implementation of the ESL program, we firmly believe that graduates of the ESL program will have a stronger grasp of the English language that will help them achieve their career, personal and financial goals. Material Needs AssistanceLocated in a storefront in Phillipsburg that houses a food pantry, the Social Service Center provides counseling, life skills case management and job readiness training for eligible clients. A Thrift Store, staffed by volunteers, is located within easy walking distance. The Multi-Service Center manages the distribution of federal and state monies to clients in need of assistance with rent, mortgage and utilities. Caseworkers in the Family Financial Stabilization Program, STEPS and HOME, meet clients in their homes and provide ongoing financial management. Starting Toward Employment PossibilitiesSTEP is a program designed to provide free employment services for qualified individuals who are at least 18 years of age and are unemployed or underemployed. Supported EmploymentProgram participants are referred to Career Opportunity Development, Inc (CODI) by the New Jersey Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) or the Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD). Those individuals wanting to work in a vocational setting but not in a community job are usually referred by DVR for extended employment. Extended employees work in our outsource center on a piecework basis. They work in many different areas including bottle inspection, packaging, collating, stuff and seal mailing jobs, coin sorting and assembly. Some extended employees also participate on enclaves in the community doing maintenance work as part of a paid training program. Those participants who DVR feel will not be able to meet the criteria of producing 20% of the industrial standard are referred by DDD to the Work Adult Training Center (WATC) program and do similar piecework to extended employees. In addition to TANF/GA benefits, participants receive payments for childcare, transportation, and other work-related expenses.
