Family Crisis Intervention Unit-FCIU

Community Based Program

General Information
Description of ServiceThe Family Crisis Intervention Unit (FCIU) was established in 1984 through family court legislation. The purpose of the program is to provide crisis intervention services to families in crisis in order to divert them from the formal court system, to stabilize them, to keep them intact, and to prevent out-of-home placement.
The Family Crisis Intervention Unit provides crisis intervention, short-term counseling and court advocacy. The program also serves as the intake unit for the county shelter program. The Family Crisis Intervention Unit serves families who are at risk for court involvement due to an erupting family crisis. One family member (the identified consumer) must be under the age of 18, live in Burlington County and meet one of the following definitions of being in a family crisis: Serious conflict between youth and family, Runaway behavior, Truancy, Disorderly persons offense, and Other family conflict or problem.

All families are initially assessed as to their needs and the Family Crisis Intervention Unit's ability to serve them effectively. Initial assessments may be done over the telephone or in-person. In-person assessments are completed in the office, the detention center, or court.

The FCIU provides crisis intervention, short-term family therapy, case management and court intervention to families at no cost, and is open to all families who meet the above criteria. Referrals to the program can be made directly to the office during business hours. After-hours access is handled by pager.
Referrals come from the court system, the Division of Youth and Family Services, and other community agencies, as well as the police and families themselves. The Burlington County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Division of Youth & Family Services fund the Family Crisis Intervention Unit.
